Finding Power, 2018

This monumental drawing is installed in the courtyard of the National Gallery of Ireland. The artist, Joe Caslin, was inspired by the Gallery’s 2018 exhibition about Frederic William Burton. Caslin chose to explore the theme of ‘power’. He invited a group of people, from different parts of Irish society, to sit for portraits. He worked with photographer Gavin Leane to create photographic portraits, and he also made drawings. This huge drawing in the courtyard began as a small, graphite and ink drawing, which was then enlarged to become a four-storey-high mural. This project shows how a drawing can develop and grow, sometimes to massive proportions!
