William Edward Gumbleton grew new and rare plants in his garden at Belgrove, Co. Cork. Maude Travers illustrated many of the articles he published in The Garden. This lithograph shows three new types of Montbretia, which Gumbleton had acquired from the French plant-breeder Victor Lemoine. Montbretia Crocosmia was introduced to Ireland in the mid-1880s. It is now a common sight in Irish gardens and roadsides, especially in Cork and Kerry.
