National Gallery of Ireland announces 2024 exhibition programme

The National Gallery of Ireland today announced a major programme of Irish and international art exhibitions for 2024.

It features unmissable Dutch and Flemish art, work by important Irish artists including Walter Frederick Osbourne and Mildred Anne Butler, and contemporary exhibitions exploring nature and the urban landscape. The year opens with the National Gallery of Ireland’s popular annual Turner watercolours exhibition and closes with the return of the much-loved Portrait Prize and Young Portrait Prize.

In 2024, the Gallery’s free annual display of the Vaughan Bequest of Turner watercolours is presented alongside a selection of eighteenth and nineteenth-century coastal scenes by British and Irish artists. Like Turner, these artists drew inspiration from the rugged coastlines and bustling fishing communities that they encountered first hand. Turner & Coastal Scenes features well-known locations including the Baily Lighthouse in Howth, Dún Aonghasa on the Aran Islands, and the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim. Proudly supported by Grant Thornton, Turner Exhibitions Partner. Turner & Coastal Scenes runs in the Print Gallery, 1 – 31 January 2024. Admission is free.

Turning Heads: Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer features works by Dutch and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who were exponents of the tronie – an intriguing painting of a head. Paintings include Study of an Old Woman by Rubens, The Laughing Man, 1629-1630, by Rembrandt and The Man with the Golden Helmet, c. 1650 from the circle of Rembrandt. Vermeer’s most exquisitely detailed tronie, Girl with the Red Hat, c. 1665-1667, is an exhibition highlight. This exhibition is a collaboration between the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the National Gallery of Ireland. Turning Heads: Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer runs in the Beit Wing from 24 February to 26 May 2024. Ticketed, admission from €5.

In 2023, Walter Frederick Osborne’s full-length portrait of Mary Guinness with her daughter Margaret was presented as a heritage gift to the National Gallery of Ireland. Painted when Osborne was at the height of his powers as a portrait artist, the picture is one of his finest works. Walter Frederick Osborne: The Guinness Portrait displays the portrait alongside comparative works and associated items, such as the silk dress worn by the sitter. Walter Frederick Osborne: The Guinness Portrait runs in the Sir Hugh Lane Room from 23 March to 1 September 2024. Admission is free.

An Túr Gloine: Artists and the Collective is the first exhibition dedicated to the pioneering stained glass studio An Túr Gloine (The Tower of Glass), founded in 1903 by Sarah Purser. Focusing on the studio’s history, archives and artworks, the exhibition explores An Túr Gloine’s co-operative practice. The rich variety and individuality in the designs produced by its members, including Wilhelmina Geddes, Michael Healy, Catherine O’Brien, Alfred E. Child, Hubert McGoldrick and Evie Hone, will be on display. An Túr Gloine: Artists and the Collective runs in Room 11 from 30 March 2024 to 12 January 2025. Admission is free.

Exploring quiet urban landscapes, Silent City features photography, paintings, prints and drawings from the Gallery’s permanent collection. New acquisitions and works that have not yet been displayed in public will be highlighted. Silent City runs in the Print Gallery from 13 April to 21 July 2024. Admission is free.

The Frick Collection’s Mistress and Maid by Johannes Vermeer is united with the National Gallery of Ireland’s Woman Writing a Letter, with her Maid for Vermeer Visits. This is an unprecedented opportunity to unite the works, as the Frick’s Vermeer — one of the highlights of its holdings — has rarely travelled outside of New York. While the Frick’s period home is under renovation, Vermeer’s Mistress and Maid will make an exceptional trip to Dublin. Vermeer Visits runs in Room 38 from 11 May to 18 August 2024. Admission is free.

In Real Life celebrates the beauty and fragility of nature through drawings and paintings from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Spanning the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, works on paper by artists as diverse as Aelbert Cuyp, Fiona Kelly, Evie Hone, Michael Wann and Emil Nolde include closely observed studies, topographical views and poetic interpretations. Recent works on loan from four Irish artists – Bridget Flannery, David Lunney, Fiona McDonald and Angie Shanahan – complement the works from the Gallery’s collection. Together, the historical and contemporary artworks explore the beauty of the ordinary and the role of art in focusing attention on nature at risk. In Real Life runs in the Print Gallery from 17 August to 24 November 2024. Admission is free.

Mildred Anne Butler (1858–1941) was one of Ireland’s first professional women artists, who exhibited widely and sold her work well throughout her career. Born and raised at Kilmurry House, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, Butler’s plein-air paintings of Kilmurry and its environs combine accuracy of drawing, startling light effects, and a sense of immediacy. Mildred Anne Butler: At Home in Nature also features the artist’s large-scale watercolours which highlight her exceptional skill in the painting of flowers, trees, animals and birds. Mildred Anne Butler: At Home in Nature runs in the Sir Hugh Lane Room from 14 September 2024 to 5 January 2025. Admission is free.

The Gallery’s annual Portrait Prize exhibition features the shortlist of works chosen from hundreds of entries each year. Running in tandem, the Young Portrait Prize is an inclusive art competition for young people of all abilities which aims to support creativity, originality and self-expression. The Portrait Prize and Young Portrait Prize run from 9 November 2024 to 9 March 2025 in the Portrait Gallery. A new sponsor for the competitions and exhibitions will be announced in early 2024.

Dr Caroline Campbell, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, said: “At the National Gallery of Ireland, we strive to inspire our audiences. I’m delighted to reveal our exhibition programme for 2024, which I’m confident will do just that. We greatly look forward to welcoming visitors from across our island and further afield through our doors next year, whether it’s to make their annual pilgrimage to our Turner watercolours or to see exceptional works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. We are grateful for the support of our committed and valued partners and sponsors, and I look forward to announcing an important new partner in the coming months.”

Colin Feely, Partner and Head of Financial Services Audit at Grant Thornton, added: “We are delighted to continue our Turner Exhibitions partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland, which is now entering its second year.  As proud supporters of the Arts, we are very much looking forward to the opening of Turner and Coastal Scenes, the much-loved annual Turner exhibition which is one of the highlights of every January.”

The Gallery’s 2024 exhibitions will be supported by Education programmes engaging with all types of visitors. The free, inclusive and accessible programme includes: tailored tours for school, community and access groups; Irish Sign Language (ISL) tours; inclusive accessible public tours; audio descriptive sessions for those with visual impairment; “At Your Pace” tours for those with reduced mobility; mindfulness tours supporting well-being; free introductory curatorial talks with ISL and close captioning; and exhibition access for community partners. Bespoke learning strands will also be devised in response to exhibitions. A diverse, year-round Education programme dedicated to exploring the collection, the building and the Gallery’s Library & Archives will run in tandem with the exhibition programme. Innovative events and activities will take place onsite, offsite and online.

Members of the Friends of the National Gallery of Ireland enjoy exclusive benefits including unlimited free entry to all exhibitions. Membership helps the Gallery to acquire new artworks to enrich the national collection, as well as supporting the exhibitions programme.

Further additions to the Gallery’s 2024 programme will be announced in the coming months.

The Gallery would like to thank the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for its ongoing support.

Clár taispeántais 2024 fógartha ag Gailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann

Inniu d'fhógair Gailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann mórchlár de thaispeántais ealaíne Éireannacha agus idirnáisiúnta le haghaidh 2024.

San áireamh tá saothair ealaíne le healaíontóirí Ísiltíreacha agus Pléimeannacha, saothair le healaíontóirí tábhachtacha de bhunadh na hÉireann lena n-áirítear Walter Frederick Osbourne agus Mildred Anne Butler, agus taispeántais chomhaimseartha ina scrúdaítear an dúlra agus an tírdhreach uirbeach. Tá tús á chur le himeachtaí na bliana le taispeántas cáiliúil bliantúil Turner Ghailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann agus cuirfear críoch le himeachtaí na bliana le bronnadh na Duaise Portráide agus Dhuais Phortráide na nÓg.

In 2024, tá taispeántas bliantúil, saor in aisce, an Ghailearaí de Thiomnacht Vaughan d'uiscedhathanna Turner á thaispeáint taobh le rogha de radhairc chósta ón 18ú agus 19ú haois de chuid ealaíontóirí Briotanacha agus Éireannacha. Cosúil le Turner, dhírigh na healaíontóirí seo ar an gcósta garbh agus ar na pobail iascaireachta bhríomhara a casadh orthu. Le feiceáil in Turner & Coastal Scenes tá suíomhanna aitheanta lena n-áirítear Teach Solais Baily i mBinn Éadair, Dún Aonghasa ar Oileáin Árann agus Clochán an Aifir i gContae Aontroma. Is é Grant Thornton - Comhpháirtí Thaispeántais Turner - atá ag tacú leis an taispeántas seo. Beidh Turner & Coastal Scenes ar siúl i nGailearaí na bPriontaí, idir an 1 – 31 Eanáir 2024. Tá saorchead isteach ag gach duine.

Turning Heads: Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer - taispeántas de shaothair le healaíontóirí Ísiltíreacha agus Pléimeannacha a mhair sa séú agus sa seachtú haois, máistrí an tronie – pictiúr spéisiúil de chloigeann. I measc na bpictiúr a bheidh ar taispeáint tá Study of an Old Woman le Rubens, The Laughing Man, 1629-1630, le Rembrandt agus The Man with the Golden Helmet, c. 1650 ó Chiorcal Rembrandt. Buaicphointe den taispeántas é tronie mionsonraithe Vermeer, Girl with the Red Hat, c. 1665-1667. Is comhshaothar é an taispeántas seo idir Músaem Ríoga Mínealaíon Antuairp agus Gailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann. Beidh Turning Heads: Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer ar siúl i Sciathán Beit idir an 24 Feabhra agus an 26 Bealtaine 2024. Cosnaíonn na ticéid €5.

In 2023, bronnadh portráid lánfhada Walter Frederick Osborne de Mary Guinness i dteannta a hiníne, Margaret, mar bhronntanas oidhreachta ar Ghailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann. Phéinteáil Osborne é seo nuair a bhí sé i mbarr a réime mar ealaíontóir portráide, agus is ionann an saothar seo agus ceann dá shaothair is fearr. Mar chuid deWalter Frederick Osborne: The Guinness Portrait  tá an phortráid á taispeáint taobh le saothair chomparáideacha agus míreanna gaolmhara, cosúil leis an ngúna síoda a chaith an suiteoir. Beidh Walter Frederick Osborne: The Guinness Portrait ar siúl i Seomra Hugh Lane idir an 23 Márta agus an 1 Mheán Fómhair 2024. Tá saorchead isteach ag gach duine.

Is é An Túr Gloine: Artists and the Collective an chéad taispeántas atá dírithe ar an stiúideo ceannródaíoch gloine dhaite, An Túr Gloine, a bhunaigh Sarah Purser sa bhliain 1903. Sa taispeántas seo dírítear ar chleachtas comhoibríoch An Túr Gloine trí stair, cartlanna agus saothair ealaíne an stiúideo. Beidh saibhreas iontach agus indibhidiúlacht na mball, Wilhelmina Geddes, Michael Healy, Catherine O’Brien, Alfred E. Child, Hubert McGoldrick agus Evie Hone ina measc, ar taispeáint. Beidh An Túr Gloine: Artists and the Collective ar siúl i Seomra 11 idir an 30 Márta 2024 agus an 12 Eanáir 2025. Tá saorchead isteach ag gach duine.

Sa taispeántas Silent City  scrúdaítear tírdhreacha uirbeacha ciúine trí ghrianghraif, pictiúir, priontaí agus líníochtaí ó bhailiúchán buan an Ghailearaí. Tarraingeofar aird ar shaothair nua atá faighte nach bhfuil taispeánta go poiblí go dtí seo. Beidh Silent City ar siúl i nGailearaí na bPriontaí idir an 13 Aibreán agus an 21 Iúil 2024. Tá Mistress and Maid  le Johannes Vermeer ó Bhailiúchán Frick ar taispeáint taobh le Woman Writing a Letter, with her Maid  Ghailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann le haghaidh Vermeer Visits. Is deis ar leith í seo na saothair a thaispeáint taobh lena chéile, de bhrí gur annamh a thaistealaíonn Vermeer Frick — saothar mór le rá — lasmuigh de Nua-Eabhrac. Fad is atá obair athchóirithe á déanamh ar theach seanré Frick, tabharfaidh Mistress and Maid  Vermeer faoi thuras eisceachtúil go Baile Átha Cliath. Is deis é In Real Life ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar áilleacht agus ar leochaileacht an dúlra trí líníochtaí agus pictiúir ó bhailiúchán buan an Ghailearaí. Taobh leis na saothair ó bhailiúchán an Ghailearaí taispeánfar saothair a rinneadh le déanaí agus atá ar iasacht ó cheathrar ealaíontóirí Éireannacha – Bridget Flannery, David Lunney, Fiona McDonald agus Angie Shanahan. I dteannta a chéile, tá scrúdú á dhéanamh sna saothair ealaíne stairiúla agus chomhaimseartha ar áilleacht an ghnáthshaoil agus ar ról na healaíne, agus tá aird ar leith á díriú ar an dúlra atá i mbaol. Beidh In Real Life ar siúl i nGailearaí na bPriontaí idir an 17 Lúnasa agus an 24 Samhain 2024. Tá saorchead isteach ag gach duine.

Ba í Mildred Anne Butler (1858–1941) duine de na chéad banealaíontóirí gairmiúla in Éirinn, a thaispeáin saothar dá cuid i bhfad is i gcéin agus a dhíol neart saothar i rith a saoil. Ba i dTeach Chill Mhuire, Baile Mhic Andáin, Co. Chill Chainnigh a rugadh í agus léirítear sna pictiúir plein-air a tharraing Butler de Chill Mhuire agus den cheantar mórthimpeall cruinneas líníochta, éifeacht solais dhochreidte agus tuiscint ar neasacht. Ar taispeáint i dtaispeántas bliantúil an Ghailearaí, Duais Phortráide, tá gearrliosta de shaothair a roghnaíodh ó na céadta iontrálacha a fhaightear gach bliain. A reáchtáil taobh leis sin, is comórtas ealaíne ionchuimsitheach do dhaoine óga é Duais Phortráide na nÓg a bhfuil sé mar aidhm leis tacú le cruthaitheacht, úrnuacht agus féinléiriú.
