SEARCH THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE COLLECTIONS
The art historian and collector Sir Denis Mahon (1910 – 2011) gifted his library and archive to the Gallery in 2010. This extraordinary collection is a unique resource for art history scholars and represents decades of research and scholarship particularly in the area of Italian Baroque art. The library covers western European art from classical times onwards. Artists of interest to Mahon such as Nicolas Poussin, Caravaggio Guercino and other Bolognese artists are particularly well represented. Rare and antiquarian volumes, many of which are still today regarded as important art historical sources, also form part of the collection. The archive is a record of Mahon’s long and remarkable life spanning the 20th century.
The Sir Denis Mahon library is available to browse through our library catalogue, and contains both rare and modern books. A selection of the Sir Denis Mahon archive is available to browse digitally through Source or in person by appointment.
