Join us for a tour of women artists represented in the national collection..
For centuries, there was a lack of education and resources for women in the arts. Many of those who were able to avail of training and establish careers were from privileged backgrounds, members of religious orders, or the daughters of painters. These class and gender biases meant that that relatively few women were able to achieve measurable success or recognition as artists. Their traditional exclusion from the art-historical canon is often reflected in the formation of museum and gallery collections around the world.
Today, the National Gallery of Ireland is committed to actively seeking works by women artists to add to the national collection. This tour features selected works by women artists in the Gallery’s permanent collection, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, highlighting the importance of women’s contributions to art history.
