Matthew says: "In this self-portrait I aimed to create a dark and moody atmosphere. I first took a reference photo with dramatic lighting to cast shadows on my face. Inspired by having recently studied the Impressionists in school I used no black paint in my palette, so all the darkest areas are really just mixed to be very dark browns and blue.".
