Writer Alain de Botton has suggested that by paying attention to our responses to abstract forms, we can discover something about our own character and about why we act in a particular way. In this way, interacting with art can help to us to better understand ourselves.
This large free-form sculpture was created by Joseph Walsh, an Irish sculptor and furniture-maker. Walsh is influenced by natural elements including local landscapes and rural life. This is reflected in his choice of forms and the tactile nature of his materials, and this work introduces a lively, dynamic element into a carefully constructed space. By taking the time to engage with this kind of abstract work, we may be able to uncover something significant about our own inner lives.
