‘I completed this painting during a three-month residency in the summer of 2022 at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. At the Louvre, I was drawn to a medieval relief statue of Saint Sébastien by Della Robbia recessed into a terracotta niche. The colour and shadows seemed to lend themselves to the French light that defined my time in France, and its beauty and classical motif became an apt backdrop for my continued use of the self-portrait.’
