‘This painting was done in a very loose and dynamic manner during a single sitting. Using broad brush strokes, the skin tones are built up on a black underpainting, creating a texture that is lively and animated. I used two angled mirrors to create a self-portrait in a three-quarter profile, avoiding the direct gaze and creating a distance between artist and the much too familiar self.’
