Join us for a special pop-up concert of Messiaen's Appel Interstellaire with horn player Dewi Jones.

Originally created to memorialize Messiaen’s pupil and friend Jean-Pierre Guézec, a French composer who died age 36, Appel Interstellaire (“Interstellar Call”) is a solo piece for French Horn; the fourth in a suite of twelve orchestral movements known as Des Canyons aux Étoiles (“From the Canyon to the Stars”).

Famous for using birdsongs in his work, Messiaen has two bird calls woven into Appel Interstellaire and also draws inspiration from the canyons of Utah.

French composer Olivier Messiaen was a prominent figure of 20th century music and was made a Fellow of the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 1990, two years before his death. His notable works include Turangalîla, Quartet for the End of Time and Oiseaux Exotiques. Dewi Jones is a Dublin based horn player and frequently works with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and Irish National Opera.
