Highlights of European Art 1850-1950

Highlights from the National Gallery's modern European collection are now on show in the upper Milltown Wing (room 37). The new display features Impressionist and Modern paintings by French, Spanish, Dutch and German artists, many of whom trained and worked in Paris. Impressionism is represented here by landscapes and interior scenes by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot and Alfred Sisley. Pablo Picasso's Still-Life with a Mandolin is a key work in the display. Cubism is represented by Juan Gris's Pierrot, while Kees van Dongen's Stella in a Flowered Hat adds brilliant Fauve colour to the display. Works by German Expressionist artists on view include Gabriele Münter's Girl with a Red Ribbon and Emil Nolde's Two Women in a Garden.

The Baroque Gallery
Refurbishment Works at the National Gallery

The Gallery wishes to advise visitors that the Dargan Wing will be closed from September to facilitate essential repair works to the roofing of this historic building, which dates to 1864.

This project, which is headed up by the architecture firm of Heneghan Peng under the supervision of the Office of Public Works, is being undertaken to provide efficient weather proofing against the elements and to moderate the daylight in the upper exhibition spaces.

The Gallery will remain open during refurbishment. However, for health and safety reasons the entrance at Merrion Square will be closed while works are being carried out. Visitors are directed to use the Millennium Wing entrance on Clare Street.

Though the work will impact on public programmes and services the Gallery is committed to keeping its collection on public display. Highlights of the collection removed from the display in the Dargan Wing have been moved to the Milltown Wing (rooms 37-41).

The National Gallery of Ireland apologises to its visitors in advance for the disruption and inconvenience caused by these essential works.

Further information on the progress of the work and the consequential disruption to visitors will be posted on
the Gallery's website, twitter and facebook pages. Visitors planning to come to the Gallery to view particular works of art are advised to contact Visitor Services, email visitorservices@ngi.ie or telephone (01) 661 5133.
