Internships are often available in a number of Gallery departments where graduates and professionals can practice and develop their skills to enhance their career opportunities.
Training and education are an integral part of the Gallery’s Conservation department. Suitably qualified individuals from both Ireland and abroad have the chance to undertake internships in painting and paper conservation, providing them with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and enhance their skills whilst working alongside the Gallery Conservators.

The collection is divided into different schools with each curator looking after the care, display, cataloguing, research and interpretation of their area. The Gallery’s curators propose and research exhibitions, research possible acquisitions for the collection either through purchase or gift, while also advising on loan requests from other institutions. An internship with the Gallery’s Curatorial Department is best suited to candidates with a recognised qualification in art history, excellent research skills and good inter-personal skills.

Internships in the area of digital media offer graduates the opportunity to contribute and support the development of digital initiatives in the Gallery. Interns will work with the Digital Media team in areas such as photography, image and media organisation and on all aspects of the website.

An internship in the Education department provides opportunities to recent graduates to gain experience in museum education. Interns form part of the team, helping with research, event programming and other aspects of the departments operations which services a public, with differing needs, drawn from all sectors of society.

Library & Archives
With its rich diversity of collections serving museum professionals, academics and the general public the Library & Archives offer a number of internship programmes. These are based in the Art Library, NGI Archive, Yeats Archive and Centre for the Study of Irish Art. The internships are suited to graduates interested in seeking admission to a recognised course in library, archives and information management as well as qualified professionals wishing to gain practical experience.

Visitor Services is responsible for the National Gallery of Ireland’s front of house operations, Information Desk, and Volunteer Programme, along with functions and events that take place in the Gallery. Interns will have the opportunity to assist the Visitor Services team in the coordination of this wide range of activities; working in both office administration and the front of house generating a positive and rewarding experience for all visitors that come to the National Gallery of Ireland.
