The Gallery is home to Ireland’s national collection of fine art, and we seek to share the wonders of that collection in a welcoming, inclusive and accessible way with visitors from both Ireland and overseas.
From our foundation in 1854, we have benefitted from philanthropic support; the first building on the site was made possible by the generosity of railway entrepreneur William Dargan. Through the years the Gallery has received many bequests and gifts of works of art, most notably the Vaughan, Milltown, and Beit gifts and bequests, each of which transformed the collection.
Today, the support provided by individuals, companies, and trusts and foundations plays an enormously significant role in enabling us to care for and to protect the collection through our Conservation Department; to stage a first-rate, varied and stimulating schedule of Exhibitions; and to deliver a diverse and exciting Public Programme in areas including Education and Library and Archives.
Your support, as a Friend of the National Gallery of Ireland or Patron, as an Individual Donor or as a Corporate Supporter, can help us to build on the achievements of over 150 years, to consolidate our position as a Gallery of international standing, and to reach out to as many people as possible to share the joys of Ireland’s national collection of fine art.
