Culture Night 2020 at the National Gallery of Ireland

Culture Night

Friday 18 September 2020

Join us as we celebrate Culture Night 2020, onsite and online!

This year, the theme of Culture Night is 'Connect through culture/ Le chéile trí chultúr' and we are excited to do just that, celebrating Culture Night with you wherever you are, and connecting with you through our collection and exhibitions.

We are pleased to be partnering with the French Embassy in Ireland on a special interactive project, the Live Drawing Project. In this digital journey across Ireland and France, audiences of all ages will be invited to create drawings using their phone or tablet as a drawing pad. These drawings will then appear live on the walls of the National Gallery of Ireland, while simultaneously being projected in the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. You'll also be able to watch the projections via Facebook Live

Other highlights of this year's Culture Night programme at the National Gallery of Ireland will include an Instagram Live tour of some of the treasures from our Library and Archive collection, a pop-up talk which we will be sharing via our social channels, and an online sensory workshop. For anyone who is in the Gallery, you'll be able to visit Moment in Time, Shaw and the Gallery, and Lace, Paint, Hair, and you'll also be able to download a brand new 'Through a Lens' self-guided tour which will allow you to explore some of the Irish history paintings in our permanent collection in a new light! You can tour the Gallery from your own home, too, by trying out our selection of Virtual Tours. If you're in the Gallery, you can see Frederic William Burton's beloved watercolour The Meeting on the Turret Stairs between 6pm and 8pm in Room 20.

The Gallery will be open until 9pm on the night, with room closures beginning from 8.45pm, and the Gallery Shop will be open until 8.45pm. You'll be able to watch the Live Drawing Project on our Merrion Square building from 8pm - 10.30pm.
