The influence of Canaletto’s early training and career in theatre is clearly evident in Canaletto and the Art of Venice. Wishing to explore this aspect further, the Gallery has invited Rough Magic Theatre Company to participate in a very special project and residency.

Until 24 March 2019, Rough Magic SEEDS are our Theatre-makers in Residence, responding to the exhibition Canaletto and the Art of Venice. Throughout the residency, SEEDS will further their own theatrical practice using the exhibition as inspiration and will facilitate a range of public engagement activities including open studio sessions, talks, and demos.

STAGING CANALETTO //  From Wednesday 20 - Sunday 24 March, Rough Magic SEEDS will be presenting STAGING CANALETTO, their artistic response to Canaletto and the Art of Venice, and the Millennium Wing Studio will be open to the public during this time, and invigilated at all times. The SEEDS would like to encourage the public to call in and speak to them about their work and their responses to the exhibition. The Studio will be open at the following times: Wednesday 12pm-5pm; Thursday 10am-8pm; Friday 10am - 5pm; Saturday 10am-2pm; Sunday 11am-5pm.

Presenting individual research and new artistic work which they produced during their residency, the installation in the Millennium Wing Studio is a contemporary theatrical response to the exhibition; the SEEDS will also be facilitating a number of workshops and audience participation events:
