Picture Library
The Picture Library consists of over 15,000 art works from the collection. Many works are available in medium format colour transparencies (4 x 5) and all works are available in black and white. We also organise new photography if required. Transparencies are regularly checked by the Photographic Department to ensure our clients receive high quality images. We are particularly keen to promote academic publishing.

Guidelines on material in Copyright
Some of the collection is in copyright, which means that copyright permission must be cleared by the artist's estate before the Gallery will supply images. In some cases we have been assigned copyright and therefore have permission to charge royalties.

  • Copyright is the right to permit or prohibit copying. It starts automatically when a new work is created and continues to protect the work for seventy years after the death of the artist.
  • Unless there is a contract or other document assigning it to another individual or estate, copyright usually belongs to the artist.
  • Like any other property, copyright can be given, licensed, bought or sold.
  • Unlike other property, ownership of the copyright in an artwork may be separated from the ownership of the artwork itself.

If you wish to reproduce a work which is in copyright, we have a database of many copyright estates. If you forward a letter to us requesting permission, we will in turn send it to the relevant estate, wherever possible.
