The National Gallery
of Ireland presents a host of lively events, many free of charge,
with something to suit every family member young and old during
the coming festive season. The popular Christmas Family Art
Holiday will take place 27 to 29 December at 3.00pm. No
booking is necessary, and all are welcome. Admission is free. Family
Time, with supervised drawing in the Atrium workspace, will
take place during the first week in January, daily at 3.00pm. For
Teenagers, there will be an art workshop on Friday 4 January from
12.00-2.00pm. The Saturday Family Programme, with
supervised drawing for families, resumes after the Christmas break
on Saturday 5 January at 3pm in the Baroque Room, with Pantomime
Time!, led by Geraldine O'Neill. Admission is free and materials
are provided (limited to 70 places).
For adults wishing to
develop their creative side, there are Drawing Studies
courses which begin 12 January, with week-long advanced drawing
classes commencing on 3 March. These courses book up very quickly,
and tickets are available in advance the Gallery Shop. On view in
Room 20 is an exhibition celebrating the work of former students
of the Gallery's Drawing Studies course, until spring 2008, admission
free.
In addition to the Gallery's
permanent display of Irish and European paintings, visitors can
view some of the temporary exhibitions currently on show, such as
Paintings from Poland: Symbolism to Modern Art (1880-1939).
This exhibition will appeal to all art lovers, especially those
with an interest in European history and culture. Closes 27 January
2008. Admission free.
In keeping with annual
tradition, the National Gallery will mount the exquisite Vaughan
bequest of Turner watercolours (1-31 January 2008), complemented
by a special display of miniatures, many painted on materials such
as card, copper and ivory, from the Mary A. McNeill bequest. Print
Gallery, admission free.
A series of free public
talks on related topics, including Turner and Romantic Nature,
and What is a Miniature?. will take place in January
on Tuesdays at 10.30am and Sundays at 3.00pm. Admission free.
Music for Museums,
is a collaborative project involving the National Gallery of Ireland,
leading US Museums, and Dublin-born clarinettist, Carol McGonnell
as artistic director. Supported by Culture Ireland, the series aims
to bring the best in Irish and American musical talent to the Gallery.
The programme continues in the Shaw Room of the National Gallery
of Ireland with a concert byThe Knights Chamber Orchestra
on 14 December at 8pm, followed by a performance by the New York
based Argento Chamber Ensemble, led by conductor,
Michel Galante. Tickets for the National Gallery concerts are available
direct from the Gallery Shop, price €20.00 & €12.00
Concessions. Some tickets may be available at the door, however
advance ticket purchase is advised.
Other National Gallery
concerts in the festive season include The London Irish Camerata
chamber orchestra on 9 December, The Royal Irish Academy of Music
Christmas Concert on 13 December and The National Chamber Choir
with a performance of festive music on 20 December.
The music programme continues
into the New Year with excerpts from Vivaldi's Four Seasons by
The Miró Chamber Orchestra on 24 February, and the final
Irish concert in the Music for Museums series, featuring Ailish
Tynan and Hugh Tinney, on 29 January.
