Release, March 2006
-audio tour
service starts St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, 2006-
From Friday,
March 17th 2006, visitors to the National Gallery of Ireland will
be introduced to a new audio tour to the permanent collection.
Produced by
Acoustiguide, these hand-held audio guides will consist of
random access commentaries on 50 key works from the collection featuring
Caravaggio, Picasso and Vermeer, alongside works from the Yeats
collection and the National Portrait Collection. Audio tour guides
will be available free from the Gallery's Information Desks.
Raymond Keaveney,
Director of the Gallery says that previous experience of the high
percentage take-up rate (95%) of audio guides to some of the recent
major exhibitions has been instrumental in allowing the Gallery
to expand the service into the permanent collection: "Initially,
featuring 50 notable works from the collection, the audio tour facility
will be continually developed to provide a substantial aid to visitors
who come to visit. Future updates will not only include more commentaries
but more languages. The Gallery also plans to have audio tour content
available on the Gallery's website to facilitate advance planning
for visitors", he added.
Among the major
artists featured in the audio guide are Fra Angelico (The Martyrdom
of Sts Cosmas and Damian), Titian (Ecce Homo), Velázquez
(Kitchen Maid with the Supper at Emmaus), Rembrandt (Rest
on the Flight into Egypt), Vermeer (Woman writing a letter
with her maid), John Lavery (The Artist's Studio), Canova
(Cupid), Joshua Reynolds (Charles Coote, 1st Earl of Bellmont),
Francis Danby (The Opening of the Sixth Seal), Roderic O'Conor
(Farm at Lézaven).
Audio tour
handsets are available free of charge from the Information Desks.
An accompanying brochure will offer suggested themed and timed visits
using the facility.
