'Revelation' - an exhibition of specially commissioned prints opens 9 April in the National Gallery of Ireland.

Press Release April 2008

-In collaboration with Graphic Studio Dublin-

9 April - 28 September 2008. Admission free.

An exhibition of twenty nine specially commissioned prints created by members of Graphic Studio Dublin and invited artists will open in the National Gallery of Ireland from Wednesday 9 April until Sunday 28 September 2008. Admission is free.

The concept for the exhibition dates back to 2005 when Graphic Studio Dublin (GSD) approached the National Gallery of Ireland with an idea for an exhibition of prints on a specific subject matter. In collaboration with the Gallery, 'Revelation' was chosen as the theme for the show. In dealing with the profound concept of revelation - to make known something hidden - many of the artists and printmakers chose to embrace religious concepts of revelation, whilst others focused on the philosophical, scientific or secular dimensions of the topic. For many of the participating artists, the Gallery's collection has been the source of inspiration for their creations.

Of the twenty nine artists involved, eighteen are printmakers who devised and executed the work themselves. Expert printmakers from GSD, Robert Russell and Tom Phelan, assisted non-print artists to translate their ideas into print form. The prints in the show feature a variety of techniques from mezzotint to carborundum, and from etching to collography.

Anne Hodge, curator of 'Revelation', says that the response to the idea has been wonderful: "Part of my job was to facilitate artists by providing access to the Gallery's collection. Some artists found this helpful while others preferred to spend time with the paintings without outside interpretation or explanation."

Among the artists featured in the exhibition are: Pamela Leonard, Cliona Doyle, Brian Lalor, Yoko Akino, Stephen Lawlor, Robert Russell, Clare Henderson, Tim Goulding, Jean Bardon, Tom Phelan, Lina Nordenström, Terence Gravett, Yoko Hara, Nickie Hayden, Sharon Lee, Maev Leneghan, Siobhan Hyde, Kelvin Mann, William Crozier HRHA, Guggi, John Kindness, Carmel Benson, Mary Lohan, Maeve McCarthy RHA, Martin Gale RHA, Donald Teskey, Seán McSweeney HRHA, Nigel Rolfe and Marta Wakula-Mac.

Raymond Keaveney, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, says that this exhibition represents the second collaboration between the National Gallery of Ireland and Graphic Studio Dublin, following the wonderful success of Art into Art in 1998: "We are most grateful to all those artists who have contributed to this collaborative venture exploring the nature of revelation and to share with us their insights on this most mysterious and profound concept. This exhibition provides a wonderful vehicle for managing a dialogue between the National Gallery's collection and contemporary art practice."

GRAPHIC STUDIO DUBLIN

Graphic Studio Dublin is the oldest fine art print studio in Ireland, established in 1960 to promote original printmaking and to foster traditional print techniques. Its gallery, Graphic Studio Gallery, Cope Street, Temple Bar, was established in 1988, to promote the work of Graphic Studio artists and to host international print exhibitions.

Since 1960, Graphic Studio Dublin has reached into the heart of cultural life in Ireland, particularly Dublin, where its studios and gallery were always centrally located. Artist members have had subsidised studio facilities, access to training, and an outlet through which to sell their work. An art historical analysis shows some of Ireland's most established and successful artists have collaborated with Graphic Studio Dublin, including Tony O'Malley, Louis le Brocquy, Alice Maher, William Crozier, Anne Madden, Sean McSweeney, and Mary Farl Powers. Today the studio has more than 60 members, and a number of associate and affiliate members who use the studios as part of the Visiting Artist's Scheme.

NEW STUDIOS AT DISTILLERY HOUSE
In 2007 the growth of Dublin's South Docklands necessitated the move of Graphic Studio Dublin's studio space to the stunning Victorian Findlater building, Distillery House, Distillery Court, 537 North Circular Road, Dublin 1. The studios, which were complete in time to create the work for National Gallery's 'Revelation' exhibition, are 7,000 square foot, and have potential to further pioneer Graphic Studio's facilities and services to members and visiting artists.
