Services
The National Gallery of Ireland's research collections support
the study of art and associated disciplines. They also provide information
on the gallery's permanent collections and special exhibitions. The
valuable resources in these collections consist of material relating
to the national and international development of the visual arts from
the middle ages onwards. The collections are located in a number of
areas in the gallery and incorporate the Fine
Art Library, NGI Archive, Diageo
Print Room, Centre for the Study of Irish
Art and the Yeats Archive. They are
open to all researchers by appointment.
Fine
Art Library
The Fine Arts Library's specialist collection comprises over 50,000
publications relating to art from the 15th century to the present.
Areas and artists that feature in the gallery's collection are especially
well represented. Many of the library's holdings, particularly older
publications, are unavailable elsewhere in Ireland. The collection
also covers related subject areas such as museology, architecture,
history and biography.

and bibliographic resources including the Bibliography of the
History of Art and the Art Sales Index

Archive
The Archive of the National Gallery of Ireland contains the official
records of the institution, reflecting the history of the gallery
from the 1850s to the present day. This is a valuable source for
those interested in the development of the institution since its
foundation and it's involvement in Irish cultural affairs.

archives relating to the establishment of the gallery and work
of the Irish Institution
- Complete
set of Minute Books recording meetings of the NGI Board since
1855
- Records
relating to the development of the gallery's collection including
register's of paintings, prints, sculpture etc
- Information
on the Directors and staff of the gallery such as Hugh Lane, Thomas
McGreevy, Brinsley MacNamara and James Stephens
- Documentation
and plans relating to the development of the gallery building
over the years

Diageo
Print Room
The Diageo Print Room provides researchers and the general public
supervised access to the National Gallery of Ireland's wide-ranging
collection of prints and drawings. Works range from simple pencil
sketches, preparatory studies for paintings, finished landscape
watercolours, portraits in all media and architectural and topographical
drawings. Highlights include Irish and British landscape drawings
and old master drawings from the Italian, French and Dutch schools.
- Irish artists
represented in the collection include: James Malton, William Orpen,
James Barry, Harry Clarke, Evie Hone, Mainie Jellet and Paul Henry.
- Old master
drawings include works by Watteau, Degas, Gainsborough, Turner,
Mantegna, Jordaens and Van de Velde.
- The collection
of portrait miniatures, many of which were gifted by the philanthropist
Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, is the best in Ireland.
- Specialised
equipment, such as light sheets to allow examination of watermarks
and magnifiers, is available for use by researchers.

ESB
Centre for Study of Irish Art
The ESB Centre for the Study of Irish Art facilitates study and
research into Irish art. The collection consists of primary and
secondary material relating to individual artists, groups and institutions
from the eighteenth century to the present.

ephemera relating to Irish artists, art institutions and associations
- secondary
documentation including exhibition catalogues, brochures, press
cuttings, invitations and other printed matter
- library
with recent monographs, current periodicals, standard references
and other publications
- ARTseARCH,
the gallery's digital archive system, provides access to items
from the gallery's archive collection
- selected
highlights include primary material relating to Irish artists
such as Frederic William Burton, Paul Henry, Roderic O'Conor,
Patrick Tuohy and art groups including An Túr Gloine

Yeats
Archive
The Yeats Archive consists of a prestigious collection of material,
primarily donated by Anne Yeats, relating to Jack B. Yeats and members
of the Yeats extended family.
- Jack B.
Yeats sketchbooks, covering over fifty years of his career forming
a diary of his activities and tracing stylistic changes
- over 500
books from Jack B. Yeats own library
- Boxes of
material including journals, theatre programmes, original manuscripts,
photographs, postcards and letters
- Memorabilia
from Mary Cottenham Yeats and an extensive gathering of old ballads,
ballad books and maps
- Material
relating to other members of the Yeats family including W.B. Yeats,
John Butler Yeats, Lilly, Elizabeth and Anne Yeats and Ruth Pollexfen
- Additional
material from the Cuala and Dun Emer Presses as well as general
Yeats ephemera such as the artist's easel and smock
