Further to recent reports in the media, the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI) has confirmed that there was an unfortunate incident in the Gallery on Friday (29 June) when a member of the public was detained after a Monet painting was seriously damaged. The painting, ‘Argenteuil Basin with a single Sailboat’ (1874), has been removed for assessment by the Conservation Department. The NGI does not have any more details about the incident as the matter is now with the Garda Síochana.
Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland said: “It is a shocking and very regrettable incident and I would like to praise the Garda Síochana and the NGI staff in dealing promptly with the matter.”
