Art Library

Rose Barton Bookbinding

The Art Library comprises over 70,000 publications relating to art from the 15th century to the present day. The collection primarily covers paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints and sculpture in the Western European artistic tradition.  Art and artists that feature in the Gallery’s collection are especially well represented whilst publications on American, African, Asian and Australasian art also feature.

Monographs, catalogue raisonnés, exhibition catalogues and collection catalogues from museums and galleries throughout the world are available to researchers.  The Library also holds the most comprehensive collection of art auction catalogues in Ireland, covering sales of European art dating from late 18th century onwards.  Over 200 journal titles are represented in the collection and recently received journals are available for consultation in the Library reading room.

The Library boasts an extensive reference collection consisting of leading international directories and dictionaries of art, as well as access to a large number of useful online resources.  Many of the publications in the Library's special collection, which includes rare and antiquarian books, art treatises, illustrated books, pamphlets, early exhibition and sales catalogues, are unique to this collection.  The Library also holds all NGI publications dating from the first catalogue published in 1864.
