Drawing Day 2016 at the National Gallery of Ireland

National Drawing Day 2017  | May 20 2017  | 11.30am – 5pm

National Drawing Day began at the National Gallery of Ireland, and now takes place in Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Centres across Ireland. It’s the ideal opportunity to try your hand at sketching, and to pick up some valuable hints and tips. Check out your nearest venue and get drawing!

Artists Drawing Live | 11.30am-3.30pm Room 5

This Drawing Day we are creating a very special still life display inspired by Picasso’s iconic Still Life with Mandolin. Invited artists, designers and illustrators will respond to the still life live in the gallery rooms and we will display each artist’s work as the day progresses.

Artists: Mick O’Dea | Leanne Mullen | Conor Merriman | John O’Reilly | David Eager Maher | Paula McGloin

Artists Sketching Life | 11.30am-3.30pm Millennium Wing, various locations

The National Gallery of Ireland buzzes with activity on Drawing Day and this year we will be capturing life in the gallery throughout the day and displaying the results in our shop window.

Artists: Sahoko Blake | Jess Tobin

Architectural Drawing | 11.30am-3.30pm   Millennium Wing, various locations

Laura Hurley, student of Architecture at University College Cork, and overall winner of the All-Island Schools Art Competition Imagining Ireland in 2116, will provide architectural drawing demonstrations to visitors throughout the day.

Secret Garden |  11.30am-1.30pm  Atrium

Join Kate Dick to create your own “secret gardens” using pencils and chalks in this family drop-in session. Use your imagination to create mazes, hidden trails, secret doors and exotic creatures!

Schools of Fish and Fish in Schools |  2.30pm-3.30pm  Atrium

Taking inspiration from William Scott’s vibrant still life, Mackerel and Bottle, join Vita Ryan for this group activity, drawing on giant rolls of paper to make one huge collaborative artwork!

Life Drawing for Teens and Adults |  11.30am-2pm  Millennium Wing Studio

Drop-in life drawing sessions running throughout the morning. All materials provided. Facilitated by Artist Fintan Mahon

Art Battle |  12.30pm-2pm  Wintergarden Café

Join us at lunch time for the clash the world has been waiting for! Legendary artist Don Conroy will take on new kid/illustrator on the block, Fatti Burke in a deadly art battle live in our Wintergarden Café! He’s the Don of drawing who taught us to “Draw with Don” but she has invented a whole new form of visual encyclopedia...who will win? Only the public can decide!

Drawing meets Science

Makeshop Robots Demonstration | 11.30am–2pm Orientation Court

"Doodlebot" is a term some people like to use to describe a drawing, chaotic, doodling robot with tons of personality.  Our neighbours from Makeshop will show visitors how these bots are taking drawing to a whole new level!

Doodlebot Workshop (Ages 5+) |  3-4pm  Millennium Wing Studio

FREE, but ticketed

This Doodlebot workshop is a perfect introduction to the world of robotics for makers of all ages. Using a cup, a motor, batteries and some markers, you build and decorate your very own doodling robot. Tickets will be available at the Doodlebot demonstration and handed out on a first come basis

Public Talk | 4-5pm  Lecture Theatre

Recent winner of the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year, artist Gareth Reid will round off the day’s proceedings discussing his life, work and of course the Sky Prize in conversation with RTÉ’s Evelyn O’Rourke.
