Supporting the Gallery

Detail from George Pencz, Portrait of a Gentleman

From its very inception the Gallery depended on the generosity of the public with private donations contributing significantly to the cost of constructing the original Dargan Wing.  More recently the Millennium Wing was completed with the support of private and corporate benefactors which complimented offical funding from government and a substantial contribution from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

In addition to public support for its building programmes the Gallery has benefited enormously from the many bequests and gifts that have contributed to the expansion of the Collection with landmark donations, most notably the Vaughan, Milltown, Beit gifts and Maire MacNeill Sweeney bequest which have transformed the Collection.

Today the institution is also indebted to its supporters for the continued operation and expansion of many of its programmes and initiatives.  Fellowships, capital grants, benefit in kind and sponsorship have enhanced the Gallery's capacity to embrace the benefits of new technologies, promote its educational programmes, finance fellowships and internships as well as mount major exhibitions.
