The National Gallery of Ireland is the Cultural Institution authorised by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to process export licences for paintings and drawings as per section 51 of the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997. When transporting an artwork out of Ireland it is likely that you will need an export licence. The type of licence you need depends on the value of the artwork and whether it is going to be transported to an EU country or a country outside the European Union.
Please find guidelines and general information in relation to the application process in the pdf document ‘Export Licences for Cultural Goods’. You can also download the export licence application form below (part 1 and part 2). Please return your completed form, including a good quality colour image of each of the artworks you want to export, to the address below. The licence will be processed as soon as possible, please note this will take a minimum of 48 hours from receipt of the application.
