In 1767 the first catalogue of the important private collection of the House of Litchenstein was published. Extremely rare today, this limited edition by Vicenzo Fanti (1719-1776), is one of the oldest collection catalogues held in the library. Fanti, who was the curator of the collection, provides a brief introduction to painting, followed by a description of the palace and finally a comprehensive list by room of the works in the collection. Detailed entries record descriptions of the paintings, the measurements and weight of many Old Master works. A notable collection, the work of artists such as, Titian, Raphael, Lanfranco, Guido Reni, Poussin, as well as, many Dutch and Flemish 17th century artists, is documented . Biographical notes on the artists are also included. Fine engravings by the Viennese engraver Jacob Mattius Smutzer (1733-1811) after designs by Fanti also feature. These include a number of head and tail pieces, in addition to the engraving shown above, a large fold out frontispiece, representing an allegorical monument to art. This particular volume has an interesting Irish link. At the front of the book a bookplate with the Fitzgerald coat of arms, indicates that it was once part of the library collection in Carton House, Co. Kildare.
