Born in Dublin, Lawless studied art in London where he established himself as a painter and exhibited annually at the Royal Academy from 1858. He contributed illustrations to the weekly illustrated magazines London Society and Once a Week. The latter published high quality illustrations by artists including James McNeill Whistler. Lawless contributed regularly to the magazine up until his untimely death in 1864.
