Illustration was also a regular feature of Irish periodicals and Irish illustration is highly regarded. Well–known figures include William Henry Brooke, John Doyle (H.B.) and John Fergus O’Hea. A small number of notable Irish artists also practiced (some in secret) this form of popular art. The subject matter of their work is varied and ranges from scenes of social conflict in rural Ireland to political and satirical cartoons. In practicing this form of popular art, these artists engaged with a diverse audience while, at the same time, contributing to the development of the genre.
