Community Engagement

Community Engagement

The National Gallery’s Community Engagement and Outreach service expands our learning programmes beyond the walls of the Gallery. Through visual art and collection focused projects and events we reach into the community and work with groups who might not otherwise access the Gallery’s public programmes. The service operates on a nationwide basis and in a diverse range of venues, from arts centres and local museums to libraries, prisons, hospitals and festivals.

Through adopting a flexible approach, the service accommodates the specific needs of each group, be they physical, intellectual or social. Our uniquely tailored events are led by our team of artists and art historians, all of whom have many years’ experience working with children and adults with diverse interests and needs.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement Projects are run in partnership with a variety of organisations every year. Working with people at every stage in life, these projects are either wholly Gallery funded or part funded with the partner organisation. Projects take place both in the Gallery, working with the permanent collection and current exhibitions, as well as in the wider community. If you would like to find out more about Community Engagement at the National Gallery check out details of just some of our many past projects on the following pages and contact us at education@ngi.ie.

Outreach Service

The Outreach service offers the opportunity to have a National Gallery tutor work with your group in your own environment. Whether you would like an introductory, illustrated talk before a trip to the Gallery, a practical art workshop or demonstration, or a short series of talks, we are happy to organise an event to suit your needs.

A 50 minute illustrated talk as part of the Outreach service carries a tutor fee of €110, while a 90 minute practical workshop costs €135. If multiple events are being booked there will be a reduction in costs. Please contact education@ngi.ie for further details.

Onsite Accessible Events

As part of our onsite public programme, the Gallery offers tailored tours and workshops for people with a disability. We are committed to ensuring that all learning programmes and courses are accessible to everyone, including those with complex needs. We work with organisations such as Enable Ireland, St John of God’s and KARE, to create bespoke events that cater to their service users’ needs. If you would like to avail of this service, please contact education@ngi.ie for further details.

“We love working with the staff of the National Gallery. They are always happy to sit down with us and make excellent suggestions about paintings that might be interesting to us. This means it really feels like the series of tours are tailor made for our group.”
