Both Maclise and his patron Thomas Crofton Croker produced illustrations for S.C. Hall’s Ireland: Its Scenery and Character (1841). Cork-born Hall became editor of the Art Journal and had a keen interest in Maclise’s work. He included two works by Maclise in the publication, The Wren Boys and Tossing Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. The Wren Boys depicts the Christmas tradition of people processing with the bodies of wren birds attached to a bush.
