The Chimes

Charles Dickens, 'The Chimes', 1845

The Chimes by Charles Dickens; frontispiece illustrated by Daniel Maclise

London: Chapman and Hall, 1845

Maclise, a close friend of Charles Dickens, provided illustrations for a number of the author's books including, The Chimes (1845), The Cricket on the Heath (1846) and The Battle of Life (1846). These fantastical images of fairies, goblins and forlorn maidens were well received, although some complained about the nudity of the fairies.
