Conservation of this tempera panel involved the removal of discolored varnish and old restorations. Prior to cleaning fragile areas of paint layer were repaired, yellowed varnishes and old restorations were then removed with mild organic solvents and areas of loss were retouched with water-colors. The re-touching of damages improved the general aesthetics of the painting whilst removal of the discolored varnish returned the painting to the original composition intended by the Master of the Tondo of Cortona. An application of transparent varnish was finally applied to improve saturation levels throughout the painting. The painting was then re-framed.
