This receipt from the NGI Archives is from the purchase of The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Miss Margaret McNair Stokes from F.W. Burton on 16th June, 1898. Miss Margaret McNair Stokes (1832-1900) was a renowned archaeologist, antiquarian and illustrator, and her writings on ancient Irish art and high crosses was admired throughout Europe. She became an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1876 and also a Member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.
Miss Stokes was a sister of Whitley Stokes, a friend of Burton's who had translated the old Danish ballad of Hellelil and Hildebrand into English in 1855. Miss Stokes was writing a biography of Burton when she died in 1900; in her will she bequeathed the painting, along with a number of other works by Burton, to the National Gallery of Ireland.
