Jan van Huysum (1682-1749)
A Vase of Flowers, 1720s
Black and red chalk, graphite and watercolour on paper, 34.8 x 24.4 cm
This beautiful drawing by Jan van Huysum was purchased at the James Sale of 1891. A fresh, confident sketch, it may have been a preparatory drawing for a painting or could have been originally intended for sale to a collector. Van Huysum, an Amsterdam artist, was among the most sought after flower painters of his day. It was an appropriate purchase by the Director Henry Doyle as the Gallery had acquired a similar oil painting (NGI 50) by van Huysum in 1864.
