Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618)
Saint Patrick, 1603
Hand-coloured engraving with gold highlights on paper, Sheet 30.7 x 24.3 cm (plate 29.4 x 23.4 cm)
This hand-coloured print was engraved by Adriaen Collaert, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp. From around 1600 Collaert promoted himself as being ‘in the service of the Counter Reformation’. The Latin inscription at the lower edge reads ‘P.S. greatly wishes an increase of Catholic faith and spiritual grace to the Senate and people of the fair city of Dublin in Ireland’. The roundels depict scenes from St Patrick’s life. The print was probably pasted into a box which would account for the freshness of the colours.
